Scooter is a sweet little one-year-old Terrier mix, who was transferred to the SPCA of Texas on Sept. 15 to find a loving home. He is a happy, silly little guy who is fun to play with, but who also enjoys cuddling with his owner. Scooter is very intelligent, and he knows how to sit down on command. He is eager to please and wants to make his new owner very happy today! Please come visit him soon. #8508944
Snowball is a gorgeous 10-year-old Domestic Shorthair mix. She has beautiful green eyes that contrast so nicely with her lovely white fur. Snowball's owner surrendered her to the SPCA of Texas on Sept. 23 due to allergies. She may seem a little timid at first, but will warm right up to you in no time. Ear scratches always help her come out of her shell. Please come see Snowball today. #8563979

Katie is a three-year-old female Labrador Retriever/Great Pyrenees mix. She is a calm and loving dog who loves to give "hugs," which makes her a favorite of some of the volunteers at the shelter. Her previous owners brought her to the SPCA of Texas on Sept. 26 because they were moving and couldn't take her along. Katie was an outside dog in her previous home, so she will need some help with house training, but with positive reinforcement she will adjust quickly. She would really love to be inside the house with her new family because she loves attention and wants to be close to people all the time. Katie weighs about 70 pounds, so there is a lot of her to love! She would be a great dog for a family looking for a sweet, affectionate dog. She is also heartworm positive and will require treatment after she is adopted; thanks to a generous donor, however, her treatments will be free to her new family. If you would like to help replenish funds used to treat heartworm positive animals like Katie, please call 214-742-SPCA, ext. 1832. Please come meet her today! #8583616
Casey is a six-month-old female brown tabby and white Domestic Shorthair. Transferred from another animal shelter on Oct. 19 for a second chance at finding a loving home, she's one lovable girl who enjoys playtime and naptime equally. But her favorite activity would be sitting in your lap after a good round of playing with a few toys. Casey is outgoing, friendly and dreaming of that perfect home. Maybe you're the one she's been waiting for? #8941967

Pet Tip: Thanksgiving Pet Safety Tips
The holiday season -- roughly from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day -- is a time associated with family, friends, great food and events that make for lasting memories. For the house pet, it is a potentially dangerous time.
• Whether from candles or from the fireplace, a fire can be a serious hazard to your pet. Keep a screen up in front of your fireplace to protect your pet from the flames and embers. Keep the candles where the pet can't get to them. The dancing flame of a candle can be very tempting to your pet, and wax spills can cause nasty burns.
• Lights on wires can cause electrocution if a pet chews on them.
• For the benefit of your guests, remind them that you have a pet. If there is an allergic visitor, take extra care to remove as much of the hair in the house as possible and keep the interaction between the pet and your allergic guest to a minimum.
• Take care to protect your dog from foods that are too high in fat for them, or from chocolate, which your dog shouldn't have. Onions, chocolate, grapes, alcohol, coffee, turkey or chicken bones, and chocolate can cause anything from a bad tummy ache to choking to poisoning.
• Make sure to let your guests know whether your pet is allowed out or not, and whether your pet is a “door dasher.” Keep updated tags on your pets at all times and have them microchipped, in case they accidentally get outside.
The SPCA of Texas recommends that anyone interested in giving pets as presents should consider waiting until after the holidays so that the gift receiver can take the time to make an informed choice about the pet.
If you are considering getting a pet for a child and want something to put under the tree, the SPCA of Texas and many organizations offer gift certificates that you could wrap with a stuffed animal.
Pet ownership is a great joy, but it is also a long- and high-responsibility commitment. The most important thing is that both person and pet live happily ever after.
