Volume 8, Issue 5

May, 2012

May is my favorite gardening month. It's a transition from spring into the rest of the entire growing season, and we're including a lot of exciting tips and tidbits for your reading enjoyment. If you like what you see, please do share it with friends.

From the Sperry Garden

I've shown you a couple of places where we removed overgrown undergrowth. That's a "Neil term" that I created for removing lower branches and even entire lowest shrubs that have become gnarled and misshapen due to years (decades) of competing for sunlight. Click for details.

Ask Neil

Lots and lots of questions this month. Remember that Neil requires a photo with each question. Click here to see this month's answers. Click here to send Neil your photo and question.

Timely Tips

You could write a book on great things to do in the landscape and garden in May. However, we've compiled those that are the most critical, and you'll find them hiding right behind here.

Native Son

A road trip finds our native son thrilling to blue yucca blossoms, an out-of-the-way nursery, and a grist mill. Click here to read Steven Chamblee's article about a recent trip to Waco.

Plant of the Month

Jimmy Turner has asked a little help with this month's featured plant. Neil turns back most of the pages in his horticultural diary to find a plant that's taken 50 years to "hit the big time." Cutting-grown coleus and Neil go back to when horned frogs roamed the earth. Click for details.

GARDENS Magazine for $14.99 per Year?

Yep! You'll pay $23.95 for one year, but for a very few more days, you can get three years, new or renewal, for only $44.95. If you like e-gardens, you'll LOVE our magazine. Every word written just for Texas, and recognized as the best regional gardening magazine in America. Click for details.

Neil's Upcoming Appearances

To celebrate the grand opening of Statewide Remodeling's new DFW showroom, Neil will present a free seminar on "Garden Facts and Fantasies" on Saturday, May 5. On Tuesday, May 15 he will appear in Alpine at Morrison's True Value. Click here for details.

From the Magazine

The May/June issue of Neil Sperry's GARDENS Magazine features articles on everything from backyard pools to beekeeping. It also includes Neil's article about one of his favorite Texas nurseries. Click here to read his column.

Rose Cuttings

Which rose is the perfect one? Mike Shoup of the Antique Rose Emporium answers the question this month with a review of the rose traits that inspire and frustrate breeders. Click here to read his article.

Texas Tree Tips

In the midst of this spring's thriving gardens, many homeowners are finding their treasured flowering pears in trouble. Click here to read Steve Houser's article about fire blight and how to combat it.
